I know that the GPS/Sat-Nav units in question have actually been programmed with incorrect mapping data so any rider/driver being mislead by them has an excuse, but in this particular case it was blatantly obvious that the Sat-Nav was wrong and to blindly follow its instructions was incredibly stupid.

I rode down that path on a MTB once and nearly crashed. It just isn't something that you'd ever attempt to drive down. The authorities had to use Quad-bikes to tow the car back up the hill and it took them 9 hours to do it.

The driver still denies any responsibility for what happen, even after being found guilty of careless driving!

‘The defendant was using a TomTom satellite-navigation system,’ Waseem Raja, prosecuting, told Calderdale magistrates.

Fined: Mr Jones, seen leaving Calderdale Magistrates Court £2,000 poorer, said he had no reason not to trust his TomTom satnav

‘He followed that system to the letter, so much so, it led him up a lane clearly unsuitable for motor vehicles.

‘The path was not designed for motor vehicles yet Mr Jones slavishly continued to follow the satnav system to the point where his eyes and his brain must have been telling him otherwise to such a degree he was not exercising proper control of the vehicle.’
